🏈 Big NFL Upsets, Big Sports Weekend!

Plus: Texas beats Texas, Bills narrowly escape loss, 49ers lose big, and memes!

Good Morning and welcome to Savage Sports. It’s Monday, so that stinks. But at least you aren’t Jake Moody waking up after missing a 41-yard field goal to keep the 49ers win streak alive. Or the refs from the Bills game that missed the game-ending PI call.

I guess the NFL called after they realized they couldn’t have the 49ers, Eagles, and Bills all lose on the same day.

I mean can someone explain to me how this isn’t a pass interference call. ⬇️

ALSO—THIS JUST IN: The Detroit Lions are good. And so is Jameson Williams ⬇️

Bad Idea 👎: The NFL is considering taking the Super Bowl to London. Yea… let’s not to that.

Good Idea 👍: Eye exam for the refs of the Bills Giants game.

Upsets, Missed Calls, Big Movers

Key Takeaways

  • Both the Eagles and the 49ers lost in similar fashion, exposing weak points as they move deeper into the season.

  • The Jets are showing resilience, so don’t count them out just yet. Could they make the playoffs? Will they trade for a QB? Will Aaron Rodgers play again this year?

  • The Bills need to find a level of consistency if they hope to match preseason expectations.

Upset #1: New York Jets 20, Philadelphia Eagles 14

That’s right—not a typo. The New York Jets!

Turnovers plagued the Eagles as they faced off against a Jets defense missing key players. Jalen Hurts accounted for three interceptions, one of which was a tip-drill off Dallas Goedert’s hands.

D’Andre Swift’s fumble was the cherry on top. Crucial errors highlighted a game where the Eagles tried to do everything they could to lose. The Jets sealed their victory with Tony Adams’ crucial interception at the two-minute warning.

What It Means for the Eagles

While Haason Reddick and A.J. Brown were exceptions, the Eagles can blame this loss on nearly everyone else. Hurts often found himself scrambling backwards, and the offense repeatedly stalled in the red zone.

All this raises questions about Nick Sirianni’s play-calling strategy. Eagles fans can find a sliver of comfort in the 49ers’ similar loss.

What it Means for the Jets

With a 3–3 record, the Jets are so far from dead, they might actually be (checks notes)  a playoff possibility?

Robert Saleh believes his defense has been holding its own against tough opponents. As the Jets approach the bye week, Saleh and his staff need to focus on quarterback Zack Wilson’s performance to secure a Wild Card berth.

What’s Next

The Eagles will be hosting the Dolphins in a make-or-break game. Jets fans, on the other hand, will likely spend the bye week in a whirl of trade rumors and headlines about Rodgers optimism and speedy recovery.

Upset #2: Cleveland Browns 19, San Francisco 49ers 17

Less-than-ideal conditions for Brock Purdy and key injuries to Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey marred the 49ers’ performance. Despite these setbacks, they nearly managed a win, but Jake Moody couldn’t make it happen at 41 yards.

At least all his teammates had his back.

What It Means for the 49ers

This loss is more of a bump in the road. Injury updates on McCaffrey and Samuel are crucial moving forward, but the loss to the Browns shouldn’t be a big deal, but rather a wake up call to address some key weaknesses sooner rather than later.

What it Means for the Browns

The Browns defense is good. Like really good. Like potentially carry them to the playoffs good.

What’s Next

The 49ers will face the Vikings in Minnesota, and the Browns hope for Watson’s return before their visit to the Colts.

Near-Upset #3: Buffalo Bills 14, New York Giants 9

What should have been an easy game for the Bills turned into a high-stakes affair. A late-game duel following numerous mishaps and penalties left everyone on the edge of their seats. Ultimately Giants fans got what they have grown accustomed to: a loss.

What It Means

Even potential Super Bowl contenders can have off days, but these happen to the Bills a tad too frequently. They survived this time, but the consistency issue needs to be addressed if they want to make a deep playoff run.

What’s Next

The Giants will be hosting the Commanders while the Bills face off against the Patriots.

More Upsets From The World Of CFB

Notre Dame Upsets No. 10 USC

The Fighting Irish, led by second-year coach Marcus Freeman, bounced back from recent disappointments with a resounding 48-20 win against No. 10 USC.

The victory marked their most lopsided triumph over a top-10 team since 1995, silencing critics who questioned Freeman’s capabilities following a 33-20 loss at Louisville. Freeman emphasized the team’s resilience, stating, “We are better because of the adversity we faced.”

The Fighting Irish were particularly dominant on defense, doing things never before seen against USC’s top-ranked offense. Safety Xavier Watts had a standout performance, contributing to a 5-0 turnover margin and scoring a 15-yard defensive touchdown.

Notre Dame also recorded six sacks and 11 tackles for loss, keeping USC’s quarterback Caleb Williams on the back foot throughout the game.

The Irish not only rebounded in style but also demonstrated their ability to adapt and improve. Freeman revealed that the coaching staff had “difficult conversations” post-Louisville, ultimately simplifying their approach to avoid confusion. The decisive victory serves as a powerful reminder that Notre Dame can’t be counted out.

Texas Rangers Up 1-0 Versus Astros

  • The Texas Rangers are 6-0 in the 2023 Postseason.

  • Jordan Montgomery was brilliant. Who would have thought?

  • The Rangers’ bullpen, for so long a liability, locked down the final eight outs.

  • A second-inning run was enough to hold up and keep the Rangers perfect this postseason.
